I haven’t seen Eliot Coleman’s book, but I remember that he was a close friend for many years, and lived nearby, Helen and Scott Nearing, who were the real back-to-the-land organic and raw foodists. They began in 1937 or abouts, in Vermont, and in the 1950′s moved to Harborside, Maine. Their book “Living the Good Life” describes a life of subistence farming and social consciousness, spirituality. They were mentors for the counter culture of the ’60s.
