What is the recipe for the berry pie on your page??? Where would I find tanini???
How can I make cheeze that does not call for alot of ingredients? I have a limit monthly budget, but I need cheeze for my vegan burgers.
Thanks for you help.
December 17, 2008 at 3:43 pm
The cheeze I LIVE by (and many of my vegan/non-vegan friends) is 1 red (yellow or orange) bell pepper, 1c soaked cashews (I soak them for an hour-then drain the water..don’t use it because it will make the cheeze gritty tasting), and I blend this in a high speed blender til creamy. If it needs liquid add “clean” water..about a tsp or tblsp at a time.. Then season it with cayenne, about 1/2 a tsp (more or less depending on your preference) and salt to taste (start with 1/2 a tsp too). Lightly pulse it when adding the spice and taste.. This always turns out delic!! You can even dehydrate it and score it before dried to make “slices” or cheeze-its (crackers). It’s sooo yummy. And remember, if you put cayenne in it, it will get hotter as it sits (or dehydrates).
Again:
1 red bell pepper, de-seeded/stemed and roughly chopped
1c soaked/drained raw cashews
a little clean water, just-in-case
1/2 tsp cayenne
1/2 tsp salt (natural salt- the pink stuff, or sea salt..?)
Note: you can buy colored bells when they are on-sale, clean them, de-stem/seed them, chop them and freeze them. They actually work best that way anyway.. because you typically don’t have to add water to the mix when you use frozen bells. And using the red bells makes the cheeze look more like nacho cheeze. Enjoy!! (and it’s relatively inexpensive!)

Hey Jacqui! The Tahini cream pie is a work in progress I whipped it up on a whim and it was a big hit so I’ll have to write out the recipe so I can give exact measurements and when I do I’ll share it with ya via email cause it’s gonna go in the e-book I’m working on!
For a quick cheeze heres a simple recipe for sunflower based seed cheeze that you can whip up either in a high speed blender or a food processor~
1 C soaked and rinsed sunflower seeds
1/4-1/2 C of water
1 Tbsp of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
1-1+1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 clove of garlic or a 1/2 tsp of garlic or onion powder
pinch of black pepper
Blend or process thoroughly until creamy and it can store in the fridge for three to four days. You can also play around with adding various spices to make it herbed or spicy cheese depending on what flavor you’re diggin’ on.
Tahini can be found either in health food stores, the natural foods section of your grocery store, or online via amazon! I recomend Artisana brand but, there are many raw tahinis available. You can make your own by soaking some sesame seeds for a few hours, rinse and drain ‘em and blend them thoroughly with a pinch of salt. You can store it for a few days in the fridge! Makes a great base for a salad dressing, a dip for fruits (with a lil’ sweetner blended in), or even blended with some water to make a quick sesame milk! Hope these ideas help! Peace and well wishes~ Rory :0)

Hi Rory,
I met you at Catch a Healthy Habit in West Haven the other night (Cinco de Mayo), during the Renegade Health Show Meetup.
You mentioned you were interested in checking out some organic farms in Western Mass. I thought you might want to see Red Fire Farm in Granby, Mass.. I haven’t been there yet, but I have seen their product at my local food co-op. http://www.redfirefarm.com/
You might also check out the Amherst Farmers market on Saturday mornings
http://www.amherstfarmersmarket.com/
Amherst, Mass. is a town that is ripe for a raw food establishment, too, by the way.
Very nice meeting you, hope to see you around the raw food world.

hey i love your blog! its addicting hahaha. I am so proud of your family and their health and weight loss. I was wondering if they are eating a high fat raw diet or the 80/10/10 raw diet. Ive been trying to lose weight and clear up my skin but i usually go raw for like 5 days and then binge on bread and sweets. ive gained weight too. HELP haha
December 7, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Hey! Thanks so much for the kudos on my family’s raw adventure! Their diet is kinda mid way between those, I do a minimal amount of nuts, but use quite a bit of sunflower seeds and I often cut the sunflower seed based sips and dressings with zucchini! I just toss it with half of the amount of seeds that the recipe would need! Best wishes on your raw journey! Remember hang in there, laugh at your goof-ups, dwell on the fun aspects of this lifestyle shift, and have fun with your food! Peace~ Rory :0)

Hey I love your site and all your help!! I’ve dropped my bp from 175/110 to 139/92 in about a month, with daily green smoothies & other raw food.
I figured you’d know the answer to this: a friend gave me a packet of chocolate almonds — they were dusted w/ cocoa and sweetened with aspartame! bleh! but i’m so sure it would be simple to use raw almonds, cacao and stevia powder. Got my ingredients, but afraid to mess up the expensive cacao. What proportions do you think would be best? Also — suggestions for a binder, to help the powder stay on the nuts? maybe soak, then toss w/ powders, then dehydrate? or something additional.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have! Your recipes rock, and you make them simple for newbs. Keep up the education, you’re a natural!
December 20, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Maybe you could use honey or Agave nectar. Agave might be better because it is thinner and should provide the stickiness needed to bind the cacao and stevia powder.

Just wondering if you will be putting some more of your smoothie bags up for sale. I’m just not in the mood for pink right now, or I’d buy the breast cancer awareness one you’ve got up on Etsy.
January 4, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Anne, Yes, we are planning to put some up this week! What color are you in the mood for right now? Sorry for the delay in the smoothie jar bag making process, we’ve been so busy with my family’s raw challenge that we haven’t had time, but this is the final week and we plan to get back into it. Thanks so much for your interest! :0)

Hey Rory, Love your site and enjoyed following your mom’s journey on Raw Fu. I have a question for ya. I know you were doing PX90, did you ever finish the 90 days? I’m on my 3rd week of the program and am enjoying it but am concerned about the diet part. He constantly states that you have to follow the diet plan and I was wondering what you did to ensure you were getting the right amt of protein etc so that you got the max. results? I am not totally raw…………………yet………………but don’t eat any meats or dairy. I’d love your input and have the best day ever! Jean
January 27, 2010 at 9:53 am
Hey Jean,
You must have been reading my mind, and you don’t even know me.
)
I’ve been wondering the exact same thing.
I’m about to start the P90X program shortly, and I need to know how the Non-Meat-eaters/Vegans/Raw Foodests modify the diet plan.
January 27, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Hello,
Thanks for responding and I hope Rory gives us some input. I don’t want to put in all this time and effort and not get the best results. I know they suggest tofu and the “meat substitutes” but I really don’t want to get into eating all that processed stuff either. I do see though that in doing the workouts 6 days a week you do need to eat enough or you’ll eventually crash. Best of luck in starting the program. It’s tough but it’s amazing how much you progress from week to week. In fact, I have to go “press play” now and do my power yoga!
Keep looking for Rory’s response and have a great day. Jean
January 28, 2010 at 8:45 am
I actually eat tofu and have found a few ways to prepare it. I used to do the frozen veggie patties and tofurky sausages and all that, but like you said, that’s processed food.
January 28, 2010 at 3:38 pm
HI, Yes, I understand the pattie thing and I do eat them once in a while but I don’t want to eat it everyday/several times a day. I do add hemp protein to smoothies and hemp seeds to salads etc which are higher in protein but also have some fat. A while back I read The Thrive Diet which was really good. I got it at the library but I think I’ll buy it, read it again, and keep it for the recipes. The author, Brendan Brazier, is a triathlete……………………so I guess if it works for him it should get me through PX90! ha-ha Do you work out already or are you just starting your torture journey? ha Have a good night, Jean

I’ve been working our for well over 20 years. I was a hardcore gym rat. I still work out, but nothing like I use to. I used to close gyms. LOL

Where are youuuuuu?!!!!!
Can you please give us some guidance?

Rory,
I am in Branford, CT. Became “raw” ten years ago in St. Louis, MO where they have 40 people show up for a monthly raw potluck. Are there any raw potlucks here that you know of; if so, where; if not, let’s start one!

Hey Rory,
I’m just starting out on a Raw Vegan lifestyle, and I need to know: How do you go raw and still make it affordable? Actually, would you have a nice grocery list for a bee-gan going 100% raw? I’m the cold turkey type, so I can just drop cooked foods in a snap and not miss them. I always try to have certain things on hand like Dates, Bananas, Cashews, and veggies, but other than that, what would you suggest to last a person one week? Or maybe just a list of things you usually get on grocery trips, and things you like to have a bit of at all times.
Thanks,
Aaron M.

Hi – I am enjoying browsing through your website and just subscribed to your feed.
I have a question. I read a lot of books about raw food and have been trying to eat 80 to 90% raw.
I recently had my blood tested and was told that I have a slight deficiency in vitamin D. Of course that was a few weeks ago and I usually get lots of sun in the spring and summer. What are some raw foods that could boost my vitamin D? I know there are supplements but I don’t want to take those.

Rory- My daughter lives in Weston,Ct and has been telling me about you and your resaurant in Fairfield. She plans on going on your juice fast next month. We may join her.
I am very concerned about Lyme Disease and just had a blood test since I am getting symtoms: results tomorrow.
Have you had good results dealing with those with Lyme Disease? Any Advice?
Thank you
June 27, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Hey Patrick! I’m sorry about the potential Lyme’s issue. I would talk to Glen at Catch a Healthy Habit Cafe (Lisa and him are the cafe owners) he may be able to give you some advice on Lyme’s. I don’t have personal experience dealing with it myself. I would also look into Hipocrates Health Institute, awesome place, they do wonders with people working with various diseases, they may have some guidelines for Lyme. Best wishes to you and your family and hope you guys have an awesome time doing the juice cleanse! ~ Rory :0)

I am very into learning about eating raw foods as a large part of my diet, and want6 to transition my family into it. I have read many cookbooks on raw foods, hoever there are many things missing from them to set the new raw foody on the right track. Is there a good book out there to teach me the ingredients in making raw foods so nutritious what they are, what they do for you, and where to find them.
August 9, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Hey Pirategirl! A great thorough book on the diet of raw foods itself that I just recently picked up is “Becoming Raw” By Brend Davis RD, Vesanto Melina MS RD, and Rynn Berry. This book freakin’ rocks! It has all the scientific info behind the raw diet and how to aproach it in a balanced way. I also gotta throw a shout out in here to my book “Gettin’ Raw with Rawdawg Rory” in it I cover how to easily and enjoyably transition to a raw diet and it contains over 100 of the raw recipes that made it so easy, tasty and doable for me to get raw! Best wishes and I hope you and your family have a fun adventure! ~ Rory :0)

Getting in touch to see if you would like to participate in an email interview that I would post on my website? 3-5 questions max, just to pick you brain…get a better grasp about your take on raw food. Let me know if you are interested…thanks.

Wonderful to hear about the improvement of your mom – your such a good son. She is a trooper and please keep us up on her progress – this would make a great documentary.
September 29, 2010 at 3:41 pm
Hey Rory.
Just wanted to say that I always love hearing about your mom and how she is doing. I know you have LOTS going on in your life right now, but if you could do a blip to let your attentive audience know how she is currently doing, that would be awsome.
Too, I wanted to tell you that I LOVE your ebook. I ordered it many months ago. Tho I have several raw recipe books {such as Rawvolution, another by Ani, and others..} yours, with much respect to the others, is the BEST!! I love it and make stuff out of it regularly!!
{A few of my friends and I have a site veggi2raw, where we have come from SAD to vegetarian to vegan to high raw -even documenting on the blog a 72-day juice feast a friend and I undertook. My main point is, I have written about the foods I have made from your ebook, and I encourage any inquisitive minds here in no-where KY to get your ebook. I am looking forward to putting pics of the foods on the site for onlookers to get inspired.}
Your ebook has been a great inspiration for me. I have all the ingredients on hand from the book all the time. They are staples in our vegan home. So I appreciate the convenience and availability of the foods you use in your recipes. Currently, I’ve embarked on my own raw food journey, and just received in the mail SuperCharge Me. I’m stoked to watch it!!
Anyhow, thanks for all your magnificent work of getting the simplicity and elligance of making delicious raw foods to the public. I and my friends and my family have benefited. Many thanks.. {obviously I could go on-and-on:}

I’m wondering if you’ve tried milk kefir ….. and, if so, if you’ve used milk kefir in combination with chia seeds (or around the same time)? I just started using both and had some serious digestive issues. I’m thinking it has something to do with eating too much chia seeds maybe, and possibly an interaction in the ‘fermentation’ of the kefir and the seeds. I want to keep using both simply because they are healthy, but I’m very hesitant. And my husband is ready to throw everything out because he doesn’t want me getting sick and thinks I’m kinda ‘self-medicating’.
What are your thoughts on the fermentation interaction with the chia seeds?? Think that could be an issue or just that I need to find the balance of the right amount of chia seeds? (I had been having a milk kefir smoothie each morning with no problems, then added the chia, and that’s when everything went south …. so to speak.
— thanks for your thoughts.
May 29, 2011 at 10:30 am
Hey Robin! I’ve tried milk kefir, but haven’t had it on any sort of regular basis. It sounds like your body isn’t diggin’ the combination of the seeds and the other ingredients in the smoothie. In that situation I would go back to doing the smoothies without chia and consuming chia in other ways, such as chia puddings or as added to plain fruit smoothies. If they’re cleaning out tooo much, go easy on the amount. It could be a matter of simply lowering the amount you consume, as you get used to digesting them. I had a similar major issue with sulfurous foods when I first went raw. Was consuming quite a bit of raw onions, radishes and then started doing MSM water in the mornings… tooo much, tooo soon! I ended up with such bad gas pains that I thought I was having a heart attack! lol I downed a bunch of papaya enzymes, deflated and felt better within an hour. Raw foods are awesome, but our bodies often need to re-learn how to digest them after years of eating cooked goods. :0) Hope these ideas help! ~ Rory :0)

HI Rory,
I loved your videos about home brewing kombucha. I wanted to say thank you the info.
I am going to start making my own to aid with my digestion and health issues. I am curious though, how do you feel about the people putting down kombucha for it’s high sugar levels? For it’s something I haven’t heard until recently and wanted to get your opinion on it. Also, do you think perhaps home made kombucha might be more beneficial than it’s store bought counter parts? Thanks for you time.
